John Hancock, the First to Sign

On July 4, 1776, the American leaders signed their names to the Declaration of Independence. John Hancock was the first leader to sign the Declaration. When it came time to sign, Hancock wrote his name in very large letters. We do not know for sure, but we think he had a reason for doing this. He wanted the king of England to be able to read his name without his glasses. John Hancock signed his name so big that all the others had to write their names much smaller. Otherwise there would not have been enough room to for all the names. John Hancock and the other leaders who signed the Declaration were very brave. The king of England thought the signers were traitors. They could have been punished.

After the leaders finished signing their names, copies of the Declaration were sent to many cities and towns. John Hancock’s name was the first one the people saw!
