AN INVESTIGATION FOR YOU. THIS IS DUE ON MONDAY, APRIL 20TH. ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN RED IN COMPLETE SENTENCES.
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
YOU WILL NEED: A MEASURING CUP, WATER, A SMALL PLASTIC CUP, AND A ZIP-TOP PLASTIC BAG
1) FILL THE MEASURING CUP 1/2 FULL. THAT IS 4 OUNCES. (OZ)
2) USING THE MEASURING CUP, POUR THE WATER INTO THE PLASTIC CUP
3) OPEN THE PLASTIC BAG, AND CAREFULLY PUT THE CUP INSIDE. THEN, SEAL THE BAG. BE CAREFUL NOT TO SPILL ANY WATER FROM THE CUP. PUT THE BAG NEAR A SUNNY WINDOW.
4) THEN, PREDICT. WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE WATER IN THE CUP?
5) LEAVE THE BAG NEAR THE WINDOW FOR 3-4 DAYS. OBSERVE (WATCH) THE CUP AND THE BAG EACH DAY.
6) WHAT WERE YOUR OBSERVATIONS? WHAT HAPPENED?
7) AFTER 3-4 DAYS, REMOVE THE CUP FROM THE BAG CAREFULLY. MEASURE THE AMOUNT OF WATER IN THE PLASTIC CUP BY POURING BACK INTO THE MEASURING CUP.
8) WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE AMOUNT OF WATER YOU FIRST POURED INTO THE PLASTIC CUP AND THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE NOW?
9) WHAT HAPPENED INSIDE THE BAG WHILE THE CUP WAS IN IT? WHERE DO YOU THINK THE WATER IN THE BAG (NOT IN THE CUP) CAME FROM?
10) THINK, THINK…..HOW MUCH WATER WAS IN THE BAG AND NOT IN THE CUP?
WHAT YOU DID IN # 4 ABOVE SCIENTISTS CALL A HYPOTHESIS — THE FIRST STEP IN THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD — MAKING A GOOD GUESS ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN. THEN, YOU CONTINUED TO TRY TO PROVE IF YOUR HYPOTHESIS WAS RIGHT OR WRONG.
