READING

BOBCATS AND LIONS

READING:  TODAY, IN OUR TEXTBOOK, WE BEGIN OUR NEW STORY SELECTION, A DO-IT-YOURSELF PROJECT, ON PAGES 440 TO 454.  IT IS REALISTIC FICTION, WHICH TELLS ABOUT CHARACTERS AND EVENTS THAT ARE LIKE PEOPLE AND EVENTS IN REAL LIFE.  FIRST, TO START, READ VOCABULARY POWER ON PAGES 438 AND 439.  THEN, DEFINE THE VOCABULARY WORDS ON PAGE 439, MINIATURE TO DEPENDENT.  YOU WILL FIND THESE WORDS IN YOUR NEW STORY.  DEFINE THEM USING THE GLOSSARY IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK.

SPELLING:  THE SUFFIXES –MENT AND — ITY CAN BE ADDED TO WORDS TO FORM NOUNS.  WHEN –ITY IS ADDED TO A WORD THAT ENDS IN E,  THE  IS USUALLY DROPPED.  OUR NEW WEEKLY SPELLING WORDS ARE AS FOLLOWS:  EXCITEMENT,  AMAZEMENT,  COMMUNITY,  GOVERNMENT,  ABILITY,  ACTIVITY,  STATEMENT,  ENVIRONMENT,  MAJORITY,  SECURITY,  APARTMENT,  IMPROVEMENT,  JUDGMENT,  ELECTRICITY,  IDENTITY,  OPPORTUNITY,  AUTHORITY,  PURITY,  RESENTMENT,  BASEMENT.   FINALLY, WRITE EACH OF YOUR NEW SPELLING WORDS  5X.

IN THE FOLLOWING LANGUAGE ARTS EXERCISE, USE GOOD, COMPLETE SENTENCES.

 

FIRST, USING YOUR TEXTBOOKS, YOUR NOTES, AND/OR THE INTERNET, DEFINE THE WORD IDIOM.

THEN, EXPLAIN WHAT EACH OF THE FOLLOWING THREE IDIOMS MEAN.

1) DAD HAD A HARD TIME FIGURING OUT HOW TO USE HIS SMART PHONE.  “YOU CAN’T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS, “  HE SAID AFTER UNSUCCESSFULLY TRYING TO CHANGE HIS RING TONE FOR 30 MINUTES.  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

2) THE TEACHER SAID, “THAT IS ENOUGH MONKEY BUSINESS, CLASS!  IT IS TIME TO SETTLE DOWN AND GET TO WORK.”  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

3) MY LITTLE SISTER WAS TAKING SO LONG TO PICK A STUFFED ANIMAL TO TAKE TO GRANDMA’S HOUSE.  FINALLY, WHEN SHE WAS READY, MY MOTHER LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW AND SAID, “WELL, WE CAN’T LEAVE NOW IT IS NO LONGER SPRINKLING, IT IS RAINING CATS AND DOGS!”

YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT MANY IMPORTANT PEOPLE TO THE HISTORY OF FLORIDA AND THE UNITED STATES THIS YEAR.  FOR EXAMPLE, GEORGE WASHINGTON, PONCE DE LEON, AND WILLIAM BARTRAM TO NAME JUST THREE OF MANY.

SELECT ANY THREE OF THE PEOPLE THAT YOU HAVE STUDIED AND USING YOUR TEXTBOOK, YOUR NOTES, AND/OR THE INTERNET, DESCRIBE IN GOOD, COMPLETE SENTENCES WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO OUR HISTORY.  WHY, OF ALL OF THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO LIVED IN THEIR TIME, WERE THEY SO INFLUENTIAL (IMPORTANT).  YOU MAY SELECT ANY THREE PEOPLE EXCEPT THE THREE ALREADY MENTIONED ABOVE.
