Bogs and Moss

When sphagnum moss dries, it is soft and fluffy and it soaks up water like a sponge. Some Native Americans used to make diapers out of it. During World War I, the moss was used as a bandage for treating wounds, it helped kill bacteria.

One troop of horse soldiers in England in 1542 had the bad luck to charge across a bog. They sank and were never seen again. Bog is the Irish word for soft. A bog is really floating land. Insects fly right to the sparkling red hairs of pretty little sun-dew plants. Then the plants dissolve them and use them for food.
