Scott’s family is driving 85 miles to the beach. They stop for gas after 30 miles. How many more miles do they have to drive? Rachel’s dance class is 90 minutes long. She has been in class for 68 minutes. How many more minutes are left for class? Tony and his mom are driving 18 miles to the park. After 9 miles they make  left turn at the light. How many more miles do they have to drive? Kelly practiced the piano for 48 minutes on Tuesday. On Wednesday she practiced for 31 minutes. How much longer did Kelly practice on Tuesday?
I am a problem with large numbers. I need to be regrouped. A calculator might make me easy to solve. I am a problem with a 2 digit number and a 1 digit number. I might be easy to show with base ten blocks. I do not need regrouping. I could be easy to solve with paper and pencil. I am a problem with a number to subtract that has tens and no ones. This makes it easy to count back.

Have you ever wondered why cleaning a dish with soap is so much more effective than using just water? You can try this yourself by smearing some oil onto two identical plates. Give yourself just 30 seconds each to clean one with just water, and the second with water and dish soap. The one you clean with only water will probably still feel very oily, while the one you washed with soap feels much cleaner.
