General English 1-2

  1. What evidence does Mark Twain present on Henry’s Imaginary Order?

Joe informs the narrator, “We drug him to sleep, or he would go wild; then he’s all right for another year — thinks she’s with him till the last three or four days come round; then he begins to look for her, and gets out his poor old letter.” Henry subsists in an Imaginary Order where he feels that his wife is with him the whole year save for the four days that he anticipates her to come back from her journey. The letter is part of the Imaginary Order which convinces Henry that his wife is in existence. Furthermore, Henry’s assertion: “”All her work” indicates that he sees her daily in their cabin. Therefore, the cabin epitomizes Henry’s Imaginary Order, bolsters Henry’s wife’s presence.

Explain the sentence: “Did I hear horses’ feet? Have they come?” using the Psychoanalytic lens.

Henry articulates these words while sleeping. Arguably, he is dreaming about the horses because they are the mode that would bring his wife home. The sound of the “horses’ feet” supports the attainment of Henry’s unconscious yearning for his wife to arrive at the cabin safe and sound.

  1. Explain the theme from by the waters of Babylon?

Technology and the progress in civilization it represent is presented as dual-edged sword in the story. Technology is symbolized both as an ever-present potential for devastation and as knowledge worth pursuing. That the actual technological cause of the apocalypse creating the barren wasteland that is the setting of the tale is only obliquely identified with the specific details left to the imagination is beside the point. In the wrong hands even the most mundane and benign technology can become a powerful weapon and the book makes it clear that the evil bringing on the apocalypse was the machinery, but the human running it. This realization allows the pursuit of progress to be viewed as a pursuit of knowledge for the preservation of the future

MS AB English

  1. What tone is the author trying to establish in the opening paragraph of this short story? Why is it important to start the story this way? Cite text evidence to support your claim.

The tone that is set in the opening paragraph is the closeness of the two main characters, Antonio Cruz and Felix Vargas. They’re relationship is beyond that of friends; “they felt themselves to be brothers.” Because the boys “had known each other since childhood,” the rising actions of the story present a more intense, dramatic conflict.

How does the author illustrate the initial conflict between Felix and Antonio?

At first, the boys try to ignore the problem, but eventually, they decide to confront the problem and discuss it.

  1. Authors often use transition words to compare and contrast concepts. Find the three uses of the transition word “while” on page ___. Cite each sentence and explain how the quote illustrates specific similarities or differences.

The word while contrasts the friend’s physical characteristics. “Antonio was fair, lean, and lanky, while Felix was dark, short, and husky.”The word while contrasts the amigo brothers’ behavior from that of the neighborhood kids. “While some youngsters were into street negative, Antonio and Felix slept, ate, rapped, and dreamt positive.”The word while contrasts the boys’ boxing styles. “Antonio’s lean form and long reach made him the better boxer, while Felix’s short and muscular frame made him the better slugger.”

  1. An internal conflict is a struggle that a character has “within”himself/herself. What evidence in the text supports the idea that the each boy resolves their internal conflicts differently?

The brothers had similar dreams and goals and there is an upcoming event. The solve the conflict differently.Antonio”He tried not to think of Felix, feeling he had succeeded in psyching his mind.”A gnawing doubt crept in. He cut negative thinking real quick by doing some speedy fancy dance steps.”Antonio decides that he will fight in denial to the fact that his opponent is his best friend. “Felix, his amigo brother, was not going to be Felix at all in the ring. Just an opponent with another face.”Felix While watching a movie, Felix fantasizes that he becomes the champion of the fight. “It was Felix the Champion vs. Antonio the Challenger” When Felix finally left the theater, he had figured out how to psych himself for tomorrow’s fight.”

Basic English

  1. Flowers for Algernonis told in a first-person narration so that readers follow Charlie in a close perspective. What is the effect of this first-person narration? What does it tell that other perspectives might not tell? Why do you think the author chose to make Charlie a first-person narrator?

The first-person narration keeps readers close to Charlie, and makes Charlie both an identifiable and likeable character. When characters have disagreements with Charlie (such as Nemur saying he has become arrogant and selfish), readers are more apt to side with Charlie. Of course, this limits the amount of information that can be delivered, since what is told must be something that Charlie knows. However, the choice of using a first-person narrator in general also increases the pathos of the story, as it heightens the sense of sadness at Charlie’s eventual deterioration. It also gives insight into what Charlie is thinking, which is remarkably important in a story that is concerned with the mind.
