TITLE:  BUILDING A DNA SEQUENCE

OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe how DNA is made up of smaller molecules called nucleotide bases
  2. Make a model DNA sequence following the base pair rules (A-T, C-G)

MATERIALS

  • 4 different colored cubes
  • masking tape or painters tape

PROCEDURE

    Nucleotide Base                Color      Nucleotide Base                  Color

               T _________________                  C __________________
  1. Choose which color will represent each nucleotide. Record your choices in the table above.
  2. Choose 24 colored cubes at random  and put them in a straight line next to each other. 
  3. Use painters tape or masking tape to tape the cubes and keep them in place.  This represents your original DNA strand.  Record the order of your bases below: __________________________________________________________________________
  4. Make a DNA strand that is complementary to the one you made in step 2  by matching each base in your original strand with the base it bonds to.  (Ex. Every T should be matched with an A, Every G should be matched with a C).  Record the order of the bases in your new strand below: __________________________________________________________________________
  5. In DNA, a group of three nucleotides is a code for one of the 20 amino acids used to make proteins.  Chemicals in cells “read” the nucleotides in DNA and translate them into proteins.  How many amino acids does your DNA strand code for?  Explain.
