More about Proteins
Proteins should be included in every person’s daily diet. They are needed for cell growth and repair and also contribute to chemical reactions within cells. Proteins are made of small elements called amino acids, which are chemically linked together. The human body makes about half of the amino acids it needs. The others, known as essential amino acids, must come from foods. Protein from animal sources such as meat and eggs contain all the essential amino acids and are known as complete proteins. Proteins from plant sources, such as beans, nuts, and grains, are called incomplete proteins because they lack one or more of the essential amino acids. A person who eats no animal foods must combine plant foods to get all the essential amino acids. Eating rice with beans, for example, supplies the body with complete protein.
