(8/31): Complete vocabulary boxes for Word and P.O.S. (Part of Speech) and Definition for the following words: cylindrical (adjective)-relating to or having the form of a cylinder; fiction (noun)-#1 the class of literature comprising of imaginative narration and #2 something invented or imagined; a made up story; glimpse (noun)-a very brief, passing look, sight, or view; hunkered (verb)-to squat on one’s heels (often followed by the word down); incline (noun)-an inclined surface; slope; slant; methodical (adjective)-orderly; done in a systematic way; careful; deliberate; momentarily (adverb)-for a brief moment; briefly, instantly; pondering (verb)-to weigh carefully in the mind; consider thoughtfully; synchronized (verb)-to cause to indicate the same time; to operate, happen, or occur at the same rate and exactly together; thriller (noun)-an exciting or suspenseful play or story; often is a mystery type story. and email do now assignment.

(9/1): Connections Reading Book pg. 26-complete Preview the Reading and Relate to the Story, Read page 27 (start at the second paragraph, stop at the word serve.), then answer the following questions: 1. How many characters are introduced in this section? 2. What do you think about Straker and why? (List details from the text to support your answer.), and make sure you fill in the Sentence from text box for the vocabulary words thriller, momentarily, cylindrical, and methodical.

(9/2): Connections Reading Book pg. 28-read the entire section then answer the following questions: 1. Who does Mark see? 2. Does Mark allow the person to see him and how do you know?, make sure you fill in the Sentence from text boxes for the vocabulary words glimpse and synchronized, and answer the question from Understanding the Setting page 28.

(9/3): Complete Connections Reading Book pages 30-31-complete Thinking About the Story Assignment #s 1-16, and study story details and vocabulary-Study definition, part of speech, and sentence use for pondering, momentarily, incline, and glimpse. Be sure to review key details from the story that pertain to the characters’ names and their relationship, Straker’s actions, and the story’s setting.

(9/4): Work on Vocabulary Boxes-my sentence and Assessment Part 2: Short Response Questions-Homework, due before next class session. Please answer in 2-3 complete sentences. Question 1. If an event occurred momentarily, how would you describe that event and why? Question 2. Point of View in Fiction is simply the perspective from which a story is told. Some stories are told in first person point of view where the narrator is involved in the action and others are told from third person point of view where a narrator is providing information about other individuals or characters in the story. Review the reading material on page 27 and explain the point of view of how Salem’s Lot is being told. Use 2-3 details from the text to support your answer. and 3. Which decision would cause an individual to ponder? Decision A: Making a choice to wear long pants or shorts. Decision B: Making a decision to buy a new house. Or Decision C: Making a choice to eat grapes or strawberries. Please explain your response in 2-3 well written sentences.

(9/2): Complete Classwork if needed: Review Vocabulary, start completing Sentence from Text boxes for all vocabulary words from Today’s Reading-words: approbation and ingenious, and finish the questions about Section I reading: Questions Section I: pages 20-21 (start at My and end at them.) 1. Who started to print a newspaper and when? 2. What was the name of the newspaper? and 3. What does the narrator decide to do and what was the outcome? HOMEWORK: Read Section II: page 21, lines 28-54 (start at Encouraged, end at secrets) and answer the following questions: 1. What caused the narrator to become vain? 2. How many vocabulary words appear in this section? Use one of them in a sentence. 3. (9/3): Complete Exercise 2.1 page 22, Exercise 2.8 page 31, and study vocabulary and story details-Study definition, part of speech, and sentence use for admonish, arbitrary, flimsy, vain, and ingenious. Be sure to review key details from the text that pertain to the relationship between Benjamin and James, the time period of the text, the government, and the details of James Franklin’s prison time and release.

After reading this selection, do you think the Assembly governs as an arbitrary system? Why or why not. Question 2. Based on the story’s setting, which is the time and place a story takes place. Is it safe to say that newspapers were extremely popular in America 300 years ago? Why or why not-Use details from the story to support your response. and Question 3. Benjamin Franklin was born January 17, 1706. About how old was he when his brother started the newspaper and do you think that was the main factor in his providing writings anonymously. Based on the details from the story, would you say the narrator had extreme passion about the old man’s eye? Why or why not? Question 2. The writer uses several adverbs to describe the narrator’s actions while executing his plan. Words like gently and slowly are used. Re-read the lines that contain those words and in 2-3 sentences explain why those types of actions were important for the narrator’s plan. Use details from the text to support your response. Question 3. Would you use a dictionary or an encyclopedia to inquire about the official language, population, and location of a particular country? Please explain your answer.
